I sold my property but why did I still received a tax bill, am I liable?

Answer

The tax commissioner is responsible for billing both the new and Jan. 1 owners. If you owned your property on Jan. 1 of the tax year, you are responsible for all of the taxes. Most of the time tax liability transfers seamlessly to buyers because taxes are paid on time. On the rare occasion they're not, sellers need to know the tax laws and how to protect themselves. Click here for additional information.
